These charming cookies bring a little of the outdoors in!

Makes about 60

1 1⁄2 cups dark molasses

1 cup packed brown sugar

2⁄3 cup cold water

1⁄3 cup shortening

7 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground allspice

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

confectioners’ sugar for dusting

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Lightly grease 1 cookie sheet.
  3. Mix together molasses, brown sugar, water, and shortening.
  4. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt, allspice, ginger, cloves, and cinnamon.
  5. Add mixtures together, and mix well. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  6. Roll dough ¼-inch thick on a floured board.
  7. Cut with floured pinecone-shaped cutter. Place about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes.
  9. Let cool and serve with a dusting of confectioner's sugar.
