The most perfectly classic chocolate cake recipe! Great for birthdays, or just one of those days when you need a slice of cake!

I went to dinner at a friend's house recently to celebrate the birthday of his husband.  When it came time for dessert, my friend came out with the most stunning chocolate layer cake.  Let me tell you... this cake tasted even better than it looked.  It's the exat cake you want when you think "I want a slice of chocolate cake!"...  you know about that craving, right? Anyhow, I asked him for the recipe and he gave it to me. It's a recipe his grandmother used to make every week!  He said I could share it with you!

2 cups sugar

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup cocoa

1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon salt

2 eggs

1 cup milk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 cup piping hot coffee



1 stick salted butter

2/3 cup cocoa

3 cups confectioner's sugar

1/3 cup milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

sprinkles (optional)

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and grease two 9 inch round layer pans.
  2. Add all the dry cake ingredients to a bowl or stand mixer.
  3. Next add all the wet ingredients except for the coffee and mix until combined.
  4. FInally, pour in the HOT coffee and stir it in until fully incorporated.
  5. Pour batter evenly into the ckae pans and bake 30-34 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven when done and allow to cool on a rack for 15 minutes then flip cakes out onto the rack and allow to cool completely.
  7. For the frosting, melt the butter in a small sauce pan and stir in the cocoa until it's fully incorporated.
  8. Pour chocolate and butter mixture into a bowl or stand mixer. Add vanilla and surgar and slowly mix. Finally add milk and mix on high until the frosting is the perfect consistency.
  9. Frost that cake and eat it right up!


I have never been very talented on frosting cakes, so I love to do this simple version of frosting.  You put one layer on the plate, spread A LOT of frosting out so it goes over the edges a little, then top it with the second layer and mound on A LOT of frosting and make it drip down the edges a bit.  I think it looks pretty and rustic, no?
